The project uses mouse models to understand how local perturbations in iron control within the smooth muscle cells affect cardiovascular function at the physiological level. This understanding provides a mechanistic link for the known association between iron deficiency and cardiovascular disease in humans, and further helps build a rationale for the design of iron-modulating drugs in this context.
