Overview:

The ‘Omics Training Scheme was established by the BHF Centre for Research Excellence, in collaboration with the Advanced Proteomics Facility at the Target Discovery Institute (TDI), with a view to increase awareness, accessibility and training in mass spectroscopy-based ‘omics research across the University.   

The scheme is organised and chaired by Dr Jillian Simon, Dr Mark Crabtree and Dr Roman Fischer and offers a number of training opportunities, including: seminars on the application of mass spectroscopy to ‘omics research; hands-on training in various ‘omics workflows; and advanced training in state-of-the-art technology and novel workflows, including the opportunity for DPhil students to undertake a lab rotation at the TDI.  In addition to the training programme, the scheme offers CRE members direct access to ‘omics infrastructure within the Advanced Proteomics Facility at a strongly reduced cost.

Seminars and Courses:

Members of the BHF CRE are invited to participate in seminars and hands-on workshops covering an array of mass spectroscopy workflows.  The programme of courses varies from term to term, with some courses running more frequently than others according to demand.  An up-to-date schedule of courses and seminars can be found below.  Courses are free of charge, but registration is required.

Past course: Basics of Protein Sample Processing & Analysis (March 2016)

In this 3-day training workshop participants will be provided an introduction on how to use proteomics techniques to address a number of biological questions and learn how to process and analyse samples using mass spectroscopy.  The course consists of 2 theoretical and 3 practical modules and is aimed at those with little or no background in proteomic workflows.

Programme: 

Monday, 14th March

10:00 – 12:00

Introduction to mass spectroscopy-based proteomics: How it works, experimental design and options for quantitative analysis

13:00 – 17:00

Hands-on Sample Prep*: in-solution or in-gel tryptic digest of your own sample (day 1)

Tuesday, 15th March

10:00 – 12:00

Hands-on Sample Prep*: in-solution or in-gel tryptic digest of your own sample (day 2)

13:00 – 16:00

Fundamentals of Data Analysis: Using MASCOT for database searching, label-free quantitation and free alternatives for data analysis

Thursday, 17th March

10:00 – 12:00

Analyse Your Own Data: database searching and interpretation of your MS results

* Participants are asked to bring their own sample for use in the practical modules.  This can be either a protein or protein mixture in solutions, or an SDS-PAGE gel band.  Alternatively, we will provide a total cell lysate for processing.
