B.Pharm, PhD

Nuffield Medical Fellow

I undertook my PhD training at Basil Hetzel Institute, University of Adelaide under the supervision of Professors John Horowitz and Betty Sallustio, with support from the Australian Government and Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. An academic clinical pharmacist, I have broad research interests in the areas of pharmacology, molecular cardiology and metabolism. During my PhD, I investigated the enantiomer-specific actions of perhexiline (a cardiac medication used to treat refractory angina and systolic heart failure) and the effects of perhexiline on patients with type 2 diabetes. I also performed investigations related to the pathophysiology and natural history of Takotsubo (stress) cardiomyopathy and evaluated the interactions between insulin signalling and with both nitric oxide and thioredoxin interacting protein.

I joined the Department of Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics in 2016 with support from the Nuffield Dominions Trust, which allows me to further my research training in the area of cardiac metabolism with Professors Kieran Clarke and Rhys Evans. Currently my research focusses on the impact of mild ketosis on cardiac metabolism and energetics, both in physiological and pathological settings.
